Fight for Gender Equality and Empower Women Through Sustainable Fashion

Fight for Gender Equality and Empower Women through Sustainable Fashion

Today, I am sharing a sustainable fashion brand called ROUND + SQUARE.  I absolutely love this NYC based brand for two simple reasons: it makes beautifully designed clothes and accessories, and it donates to Equality Now to help bring gender equality and empower women. Who doesn’t love sustainable fashion and also support amazing causes? Well, ROUND + SQUARE allows you to do both at the same time!

How was ROUND + SQUARE Founded?

ROUND + SQUARE was founded by Henriette Ernst, who used to be a head designer for fabrics and color concept at Céline. During a conversation with a lawyer at Equality Now, Henriette learned about many heartbreaking issues: rape cases, genital mutilation, child marriage, and education for girls. After learning about these problems, Henriette wanted to support gender equality and empower women using her skills in fashion. In 2016, she founded this sustainable fashion brand called ROUND + SQUARE.

How does ROUND + SQUARE Fight for Gender Equality and Empower Women?

What I really love about ROUND + SQUARE is their beautiful designs and tasteful messages about gender equality and women empowerment. In ROUND + SQUARE, you can find a range of products from organic T-shirts to Italian silk bandanas. Every piece of product beams vibrant colors and communicates messages of peace, prosperity and equality.

To really make a change, I think it’s important for us to openly talk about gender equality and women empowerment. But we often feel uncomfortable to initiate serious conversations to discuss about these issues. With playful designs and soft messages, ROUND + SQUARE offers an effortless way to let people open up their thoughts and help gather ideas together. And if you mean business, you can also use their hashtag #IWEARCAUSEICARE to start a conversation as well!

In ROUND + SQUARE, they don’t just talk the talk, but they also walk the walk. In addition to having meaning messages in all their products, ROUND + SQUARE also does actions to support gender equality and empower women. 30% of their sales goes to support Equality Now’s advocacy for women and girls.

So what is Equality Now? In case you don’t know, Equality Now is an international organization that advocates for women’s rights. They have an international network of lawyers and activists that hold governments accountable to end issues such as female genital mutilation, legal inequality, and sexual crimes, etc. Among the many accomplishments, Equality Now led an effort that resulted in the first US law criminalizing sex tourism. The organization also helped establish the first US federal civil action against a sex tour operator exploiting girls overseas.

With ROUND + SQUARE’s products, I feel that I can look fashionable and support meaningful causes at the same time!

ROUND + SQUARE is a Sustainable Fashion Brand and Affordable!

In ROUND + SQUARE, all production follows the highest ethical and environmental standards. They steer away from unfair, slave, and child labor, and they ensure all workers are satisfied.

Additionally, ROUND + SQUARE focuses on using sustainable materials and innovative methods to minimize its environmental impact. For materials, they use 100% organically farmed cotton and recycled yarn from PET bottles. And their suppliers use innovative methods such as Canepa’s Kitotex printing process to cut down water use and toxins.

At this point, you may wonder, “Wow, this sustainable fashion brand sounds awesome! But is it expensive?”. The answer is “Not at all!”. To cut down on production cost, ROUND + SQUARE exclusively sells online to remove unnecessary costs associated with middlemen.

ROUND + SQUARE: “Girl Power” Silk Bandana

I found all their designs super playful and cute, and I particularly love this “Girl Power” silk bandana. It is very versatile. It goes well with different outfits, and it can be worn in many ways! Below, I showcased 5 different ways you can wear this ‘Girl Power’ silk bandana:

Around the neck.

This is my favorite way of wearing this ‘Girl Power’ silk bandana. You can wear it with a sundress like below, or you can pair with a button down shirt instead! Whether you want to dress it up or down, it adds a classic touch to any outfits!

Hair Tie.

Another way you can wear it is to use it as a hair tie! If you wear it this way, make sure to secure it properly with pins. Otherwise, the silk bandana can slip away. But I guess, in that case, there is a good excuse to buy another one because ROUND + SQUARE donates 30% to Equality Now!

Bracelet!

I love wearing the bandana as a bracelet too. On the corner, there is a small print that says “#DreamBig”. Seeing this motivates me to hustle harder when I am working.

Purse Tie.

I love adding accessories to my purse. But I don’t like using key chains because it leaves marks on the leather. This silk bandana is a great alternative to traditional key chains because it’s gentle and a great way to customize your purse.

Belt.

I love belts, but sometimes, I just want to take it off because of my food baby…Well, if you feel the same way, you can switch things up like me and wear a bandana instead!

Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe Challenge Part 5

Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe Challenge Part 5

To encourage you to support sustainable fashion and shop responsibly this Spring, I started a Spring10x10 challenge. Today, I am sharing the last two outfits and a few lessons I learned about capsule wardrobe. To recap the clothes I had in this Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe Challenge, please read this post: Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe Challenge Part 1

Pros of a Capsule Wardrobe

I love the concept behind a capsule wardrobe and how it helps us become more sustainable. Here are the reasons why I like it:

  1. Reduce Meaningless Purchases. Every year, we send over 11 tons of unwanted clothes to landfills. By buying less, we will produce less waste and do less harm to the environment. Related: Shopping Tips: 10 Ways to Resist Shopping Temptations
  2. Travel Friendly. I travel a lot. By a lot, I mean I travel every week and practically live out of a suitcase. Having a small and flexible wardrobe helps me pack light and efficiently.
  3. Reduce Decision Fatigue. I used to waste so much time in the morning trying to figure out what to wear. This led to decision fatigue and a lot of energy wasted on useless things. That’s when I decided to downsize my closet so that I could reserve more mental power to get a more productive day.  Related: Style Advice: Why I Wanted to Build a Minimalist Wardrobe

Cons of a Capsule Wardrobe

But after completing this Spring10x10 challenge, I realized that capsule wardrobe has a few serious limitations. Quite frankly, other than for blogging and traveling, I don’t think I can live my life doing only 10×10 challenges.

  1. Lack of outfit flexibility. Just to give you an example, I spent my last 10 days in 3 different cities: Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Chicago. With the weather variation, there was no way I could only pack 10 pieces of clothes and shoes for all the different occasions I needed to go to. In life, we all have so many occasions to dress for, and our body evolves as well. It’s impossible to own a fixed number of clothes for a long time.
  2. Inconvenience. Sometimes, you need the extra clothes, shoes and accessories for the convenience. I am all about supporting sustainable fashion and shopping less. But when you downsize your wardrobe to a point that will reduce the quality of life, I don’t think it’s worth doing at all. By inconvenience, I meant the frequency of laundry you will have to do when owning less and the brainpower you spend on creating different outfit variations. I think that there is a fine balance you have to strike when you are downsizing your closet. Related: Style Advice: How to Purge Your Closet?

The Ultimate Goal of a Capsule Wardrobe

In my last post, I explained that supporting sustainable fashion really boils down to finding a style. Once you know what you like to wear, everything else will fall into place. You will start to buy purposefully, stop following trends, and buy better quality clothes. This will then produce less waste and help you be more sustainable. To put a cherry on top, you can always choose to support sustainable fashion brands and ethical clothing companies if their clothes speak to your style.

To sum this up, whether or you decide to build a capsule wardrobe or do a Spring10x10 challenge, the ultimate goal of doing all these exercises is to help you cultivate a personal style. I found that an exercise like this is somewhat helpful because it forces me to discover the styles, colors and patterns of clothes I gravitate toward. However, is this necessary? Well, I think it’s fun and practical when you are traveling. But other than that, coming up with the last two outfits was seriously a struggle, and you don’t have to go through that to discover your style!

Outfit #9 and Outfit#10

In these two outfits, I mainly mixed and matched a denim shirt, a pair of black denim, a black blouse and a pair of white heels.

I personally found outfit#9 super creative because I wore it as an off-shoulder top. To make it more edgy, I paired with my gentle monster glasses as well as a black choker (I don’t own a choker, so I used my Bose headphone audio cord instead… talking about sustainable fashion! LMAO).

Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe Challenge Part 4

It’s almost the end of my Spring10x10 challenge! To be honest with you, I started to feel the pressure! At this point, I have already worn everything at least twice from my capsule wardrobe selection! To make the remaining outfits look different, I started utilizing more accessories, and they really help. If you are too doing a Spring10x10 challenge to support sustainable fashion, I hope you find this post helpful!

The Key to Success for a Spring10x10 Challenge

Let me tell you the key to success when doing a Spring10x10 Challenge – and that is accessories! Okay… alright, I know you already know it, smartypants! But with so many accessories available, what will you pick? Earrings? Or statement necklaces? Or hat? I will say no to all of the above!

If I have to choose only one accessory for a capsule wardrobe challenge, I will for sure go with a scarf! The reason is simple. A scarf is functional and extremely versatile. Unlike other accessories such as jewelries, a scarf actually offers warmth. And you can wear a scarf in 25 different ways! Don’t believe me? Go check out these video by Wendy – 25 Different Ways to Wear a Scarf!

Not doing a capsule wardrobe challenge? No worries! A scarf is also great for travel fashion! Especially for those who prefer to pack light, a scarf is a great accessory for travelers. I personally love to look different in all my traveling pictures, and a scarf offers a great solution to those wants to pack light but also look stylish.

Spring10x10 Challenge Outfit #7

If you haven’t visited my previous posts yet, here are the links to all my outfit ideas from this Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe Challenge Part 1Part 2, and Part 3! And here is a recap of what I have in this Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe Challenge:

Note: Some of these clothes are old and sold out, and so I substituted with similar items from the same brand.

In my outfit #7, I am incorporating a silk scarf from ROUND + SQUARE! I love this sustainable fashion brand because they donate to Equal Now to protect women’s rights.

Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe Challenge Part 4

Please excuse my unusal selfie! I was running out of time this weekend. But I will be taking better pictures of this outfit so you can see it better! To spice up my go-to chambray shirt, I decided to tie a scarf around the collar. I love the difference a simple scarf can make to an outfit!
