5 Basic Tips to Restyle a Cocktail Dress

Today, I am sharing 5 basic tips to restyle a cocktail dress. I used to buy a new cocktail dress for every special occasion and then forget about it after wearing it only once or twice. This is totally not sustainable, and now I have way too many cocktail dresses in the closet. Wanting to wear my existing clothes more often, I started looking for restyling ideas for cocktail dresses. After many trials and errors, I found myself keeping going back to these 5 guiding principles when creating new looks. If you are also looking for new ways to restyle a cocktail dress, I hope you find today’s post helpful!

1. Wear a cocktail dress as a top

You can wear any cocktail dress as a top by pairing a skirt over it.  While this restyling tip may seem basic, you can definitely take it to the next level by mixing and matching different textures and colors. Here, I wore a high slit skirt over my cocktail dress. I love this look because you can see the red lace underneath the slit. It looked like a peek-a-boo cutout dress, but really, I was just trying to shop less and lower the cost-per-wear of my cocktail dress.

2. Wear a cocktail dress as a skirt

If you can wear a cocktail dress as a top, you can also wear it as a skirt. How? I love dressing down a fancy dress with a sweater. For summer, you can also pair a cocktail dress with a simple T-shirt or a button-down shirt too!

Here I wore my blue lace dress as a skirt and paired it with a navy cashmere sweater.

In the recent fashion for relief charity show in Cannes, they paired a causal tee over a fancy dress during the closing walk. It’s pretty chic, right?

3. Wear a cocktail dress all year around with different jackets

Personally, I think jackets are the easiest way to restyle a dress. I also think that everyone should own at least one of these classic jackets: a black leather jacket, a beige trench coat, and a denim jacket. One way to become more sustainable with fashion is to stick with classic styles because they never go out of style, so you shop less in a long run. Here are some of my favorite jackets from sustainable fashion brands:

4. Pair a cocktail dress with clothes of different colors

When mixing and matching different pieces together, I always think about colors first. I usually follow these basic color theories:

  1. Complimentary colors. Colors opposite to each other on the color wheel are considered complimentary colors, and I usually apply this theory on accessories. For example, pairing an orange clutch with a blue dress.
  2. Neutal colors. Neutral colors are black, white, beige, grey, silver, gold and brown. They pretty much work well with any colors.
  3. Same color of different shades. I love pairing red with pink, navy with powder blue, and purple with lavender, etc. You get the idea. And you can introduce any neutral colors to this mix as an accent color too!

I personally love clothes of solid colors and I don’t usually mix prints together. But in case you want to mix and match prints and florals, these color theories still hold. Match prints with base colors that complement each other. To learn more color theories, here is a pretty good introduction to color theory!

Lately, I started buying only blue color clothes when I go shopping. I found it easier to mix and match when all the clothes are of the same color spectrum.

5. Restyle a cocktail dress with different accessories

You can make a cocktail dress look completely different by just switching up your accessories. A subtle change such as pairing with earrings vs. a hat can make a huge difference.

  1. Make your Chambray Shirt an Off-Shoulder Top

If there is one trend that trumps all other trends in 2017, I will say it’s the off-shoulder look! Com’on, how can you not fall in love with this trend? Ultra feminine and classy, an off-shoulder top is a perfect way to make a woman out of you. (Mulan is my favorite Disney movie.) But in 2017, we will make fashion more sustainable. To create this off-shoulder look with a chambray, simply flip the collars and pull the shirt down. This is a new way to wear a chambray shirt in 2017.

  1. Wear your Chambray Shirt under a Sweater

I feel like I am heating up! Two new 2017 looks in a row. (Anyone here also a beer bong champion back in college?)

  1. Transform your Chambray Shirt into a One-Shoulder Top

Boom! I am on fire! This is the 3rd way to wear a chambray shirt in 2017! The one-shoulder trend is so hot in 2017. And the good news is, we can create this look in a “sustainable fashion” way.

To create this look, slip one arm into the sleeve, and leave the other arm out. Fasten just enough buttons to cover up your boobs and then wrap the empty sleeve around the waist. To finish the look, fasten one button from the sleeve with one of the empty button holes at the tail end of the shirt. This sounds a bit complicated, but I will upload pictures to demonstrate this soon! Stay tuned.

  1. Wear your Chambray Shirt underneath a Classic Trench Coat

A chambray shirt is typically for a casual outfit. But you can also wear it to more formal events by using it as a layering piece. Here, I wore it as a layering piece underneath my trench coat!

  1. Wear your Chambray Shirt as a Scarf

You can wear your Chambray as a scarf! Simply tie it over your shoulder, and you will get this effortless preppy look. I love this look on a classic stripe shirt or a classic white tee.

Food for thought – How will this look if you wear a Canadian tuxedo and top it with another chambray shirt as a scarf? Can one ever have too much denim? Well, I guess you will never know until you try it!

  1. Tie your Chambray Shirt around the waist

Have you ever wondered how to spice up your classic shift dress? Simply tie a chambray shirt around the waist. Vola! You immediately created this waist cincher look that’s super popular right now in 2017. Flex your creative muscle, and you will find many ways to support sustainable fashion.

  1. Canadian Tuxedo with a Twist!

Canadian tuxedo is definitely one of my favorite ways to wear a chambray shirt. You can never go wrong with a denim on denim outfit. Plus, you are supporting sustainable fashion when you are not buying additional pieces to create a look.

But if you wanna upgrade your classic Canadian Tuxedo this year, you can wear a pair of black fishnet underneath your distressed denim. Adding a little bit of fishnet is a tasteful way to wear a chambray shirt in 2017!

  1. Wear your Chambray Shirt as a Jacket (Upgraded Version)

Pretty classic and self explanatory! To spice up this chambray look in 2017, just wear a bikini bra underneath and use your chambray jacket to make it a little bit modest!

  1. Pair your Chambray Shirt with anything White

White and blue are my favorite colors. I love pairing my chambray with anything white. White shorts, white skirts, and white denims. Simply classic.

  1. Tie a knot instead of wearing your Chambray Shirt Tucked in

Don’t be boring! Once in awhile, you just have to let lose and untuck your chambray shirt! Tie a knot instead!

  1. Pair your Chambray Shirt with any Stripes

Statement stripes are so in in 2017. To offset the crazy stripes, wash down your wildness with a classic chambray shirt!

  1. Layer a Chambray Shirt underneath an Off-Shoulder Dress

This type of layering will work well with off shoulder dresses such as these ones from Fame and Partner. Another way to wear your off-shoulder stuff during chilly seasons!

  1. Cinch your Chambray Shirt with a High Waisted Belt

Love that cinched-in waist look? Well, wear a high waisted belt over your oversized chambray shirt. This is definitely an updated way to wear a chambray shirt in 2017!

  1. Pair your Chambray Shirt with anything Black (Fishnet!)

When I say pair your chambray with anything black, I really mean it. Black leather pants, black distressed jeans, and even black fishnet! Anything black in all kinds of fabrics will go well with a chambray shirt.

  1. Transform your dress into a skirt with a Chambray Shirt

Simply wear your Chambray Shirt over a dress and tie a knot in the end. Then, I love hiding the knot by flipping it inward to create a polish look.

I constantly find myself going back to this Madewell chambray shirt over and over again because it is just super versatile. Below I listed chambray shirts from different ethical clothing companies and sustainable fashion brands. I hope you will find one that fits!

Sustainable Fashion for 8 Spring/Summer Fashion Trends in 2017!

With so many new Spring/Summer fashion trends in 2017,  which ones will stick around? And which ones will go away after a summer fling? In today’s post, I will talk about fashion trends that I love, stay away from, and cannot resist. Lastly, I will also provide sustainable fashion options to these 8 Spring/Summer fashion trends in 2017!

It’s so tempting to go shopping when everyone you know is wearing the latest Spring/Summer fashion trends in 2017! No worries, I got you covered. Check out this post before you decide to click that BUY button: Shopping Tips: 10 Ways to Resist Shopping Temptations

1. Statement Stripes

Whether it’s horizontal, vertical, thin or thick, statement stripes are here to stay. I can’t think of another pattern that’s more classic than stripes. For spring and summer, I personally love nautical colors and neutral colors. And my favorite is blue and white seersucker. Below are stripe pieces that I love from my favorite sustainable fashion brands:

2. Floral

Can you really step into Spring/Summer fashion without floral? Absolutely not! I love floral. And I don’t think floral is strictly a Spring/Summer fashion trend in 2017. I see it every year, and it’s pretty timeless! Fortunately, there are sustainable fashion brands that make super cute floral stuff, but they are all so pricey! 🙁 I discovered this Australia brand called “We Are Kindred”. They offer the “Seed the Change” program, and they plant a tree for every item you buy from them! And I also love Misa Los Angeles because everything is ethically made in L.A.!

3. Shoulders!! – Off-Shoulder / One-Shoulder / Cold-Shoulder

Sexy yet subtle, the Off-Shoulder / One-Shoulder / Cold-Shoulder trend is one that I was trying to resist for the longest time! I thought this trend was going to be short-lived, but I was so wrong. This spring/summer fashion trend has been going strong since 2015, and it will continue to gain popularity in 2017.  You can definitely re-create the sexy shoulder look with a normal blouse, as seen on Man Repeller. But don’t expect it to look as sleek as an actual off-shoulder or one-shoulder top.  I tried it numerous times as seen here, and I finally decided to invest in one.

I love this NYC brand called Yumi Kim, but unfortunately, I don’t think this brand is “sustainable”.  Their manufacturing information is unknown. This is the first non-sustainable and non-classic top I bought this year. Feeling a bit guilty but I am compensating with buying less! I really wish there were more feminine sustainable fashion brands that are not super expensive!

4. Bomber Jackets

Bomber jackets are not really a summer fashion trend. But if you live on the west coast like me, you are going to need a thin jacket for the chilly weather at night. I like bomber jackets, but I also think that bomber jackets are totally replaceable.  You can substitute it with so many other classic styles such as a military field jacket or a denim jacket.

Here is a sustainable fashion option for bomber jackets:

Here are some sustainable fashion options that you can purchase to substitute bomber jackets:

5. Corset Belts

I never dig corset belts, and I think it’s going to flop after a short season. However, I do like the cinched waist look. To accomplish that, you can simply purchase a high waist belt. There are so many classic styles you can use to substitute corset belt, and here is one sustainable fashion option:

6. White Shirt Dress

White shirt dress is something that you can totally borrow from your boyfriend! Just steal one of his linen white shirts, roll up the sleeves, wear a slip-on underneath and a high-waist belt over. Vola! You are good to go. Totally sustainable and classic…

But if you must have a white shirt dress, check out these sustainable fashion options:

7. Two Toned Vintage Denim

I personally found this 2017 Spring/Summer fashion trend totally overhyped. Not too stoked to wear anything two-toned on my legs, because it makes my legs appear shorter. But if you dig it, check out these sustainable fashion options:

8. Feminist Fashion

Feminist fashion is totally in, and it will not go away! And most feminist fashion donate to organizations that advocate for women’s rights. So why wouldn’t you want to support?

If you are like me who prefer subtle and playful feminist fashion, check out Round + Square. They make high quality silk bandanas.
