Choosing the right laptop sets you up for success when it comes to photo-editing. While many photographers prefer MacBook Pro (what I currently use as well), I don’t think it’s the best laptop option given its price and features. Today, I am reviewing the best 2018 13″ Laptop for Photo Editing: Dell XPS 13 and telling you why it is!
2018 Best 13″ Laptop for Photo Editing – Dell XPS 13
Starting at $749, this Dell laptop is more affordable than the lowest level of MacBook Pro (which is often used by photo-editers). But today, the Dell XPS 13 I am reviewing is all decked out, and the features are truly impressive! Read on!
Power Efficient – Dell XPS 13 lasts for 15 hours*
With its ability to last for 15 hours, the Dell XPS 13 has the longest battery life out of all 13″ laptops in the market. It is ENERGY STAR® certified and power efficient. This feature comes in handy for photo editing since lightroom/photoshop drains your battery, and outlets ain’t always available at cafes.
Multiple Ports and Slots
One thing I love about this Dell XPS for photo editing is that it comes with 3 USB-C ports and even a microSD card slot! The multiple ports and slots trumps my current Macbook Pro. Typically, I have to carry an adapter every time I transfer photos on my MacBook Pro. But now with a Dell XPS 13, I can truly pack light when I work at a cafe.
Ultra HD 4K display with anti-reflective coated touchscreen
A high definition display helps you edit the details when zooming into a photo. But to be honest, once the pixel density of the screen reaches a certain point, human eyes cannot differentiate any higher screen resolutions. With that said, any higher screen resolutions, such as ultra HD 4K display (3,840×2,160 resolution), will not give you added benefit compared to the retina display (2560-by-1600) of my current Macbook Pro, and it will only drain more battery. However, I love the the anti-reflective coated screen. This is particularly important for touch screens because they tend to have a glaring problem.
Dell XPS is Compact and Light
A light weight laptop is important because you are already carrying a lot of equipment – camera, lenses and tripods. Weighing at 2.65 pounds, Dell XPS 13 is not only lighter than the MacBook Pro, but the accessories are also way more compact as well.
Smarter Material and Recycle Friendly
Sustainability goes beyond fashion. This Dell XPS 13 is free of materials like cadmium, lead, mercury and some phthalates, and it’s also EPEAT® Gold registered and BFR/PVC-free. 90% of the laptop’s parts can be easily recycled or reused, and the white bamboo packaging trays are 100% recyclable
Color Calibration (Con)
While Dell XPS 13 seems to be better than the MacBook Pro, one thing I love about the MacBook Pro is its accurate color display and its color consistency with iPhones. Color calibration is extremely important for photo editing, and I found that the Dell’s color is a bit more saturated.
Choosing the right equipment is extremely important for photo editing. While MacBook Pro is the more popular option for photographers, I think this Dell XPS 13 the best laptop for photo editing in 2018. Among the many great features: light weight, energy efficient, and fast processing power, this Dell XPS 13 starts $1,199, making it a very affordable option for novice photographers who typically are reluctant to invest a lot right off the bat!
Anyway, I hope you find this post helpful, and I wish you best of luck in your photography journey!
