Spring 2017 Capsule Wardrobe Challenge Part 2

Spring 2017 Wardrobe Challenge Part 2

As we are transitioning into the new season, I wanted to do a Spring 2017 capsule wardrobe challenge to show you how to look spring ready with the clothes you already have! By the end of the post, I hope you will feel inspired to shop less and re-wear your existing clothes more often. Supporting sustainable fashion can be as simple as mixing and matching creatively!

Where to Start a Capsule Wardrobe Challenge?

If you haven’t done a capsule wardrobe challenge before, and you don’t know where to start, just remember this golden ratio – 3:3:1.

Capsule Wardrobe’s Golden Ratio = 3 Tops + 3 Bottoms + 1 Dress

What it means is that, as long as you have 3 tops, 3 bottoms and 1 dress, you already have 10 different outfits. Well, mathematically speaking. This golden ratio also leaves you room for jackets and shoes! Easy, right? Once you pick out the 10 items from your closet, have fun with it and make 10 different outfits!

As you become more experienced, feel free to change this ratio and even challenge yourself with less clothes. Typically, you don’t include accessories. But in my Spring 2017 capsule wardrobe challenge, I wanted to make it harder and included a purse.

Steps to a Capsule Wardrobe Challenge:

  1. Pick 10 Items from Your Closet
  2. Create 10 different outfits with them

Establish a Color Palette when doing a Capsule Wardrobe Challenge!

Once you decide on a clothing ratio, pick a color palette for your capsule wardrobe challenge.  Establishing a cohesive color palette gives you flexibility when pairing clothes, and it maximizes the usability of each item you pick! To see an example, you can visit my Summer 2016 capsule wardrobe challenge.

Many people opt for the safest route when they are picking a color palette – they tend to stick with neutral colored clothes. Afterall, neutral colors are staple and classic. But if you are like me who loves bright colors and prints, then you can start with mixing one bright item. Here I mixed in a pink pleated skirt, and I love pairing it against the black color!

I always use one item from the last outfit as a pivotal piece to transition to the next outfit.

In outfit #3, I kept the distressed denim from outfit #2 and paired it with a classic chambray shirt. I tied a front knot with the shirt to give the overall look a casual flair. This outfit is good for any casual outing in LA – a brunch or a shopping trip!

In outfit #4, I kept the chambray shirt from outfit #3 and layered it underneath a classic trench coat. I wore this trench coat as a dress, and I loved it! It’s classy, sexy and creative.

You can easily find a trench coat with this length at any mainstream retail stores. But I highly recommend buying a Burberry heritage trench because it uses a patented Gabardine fabric and repels water!

I Spilled Black Tea on my Burberry Trench

One time, I fell asleep with a cup of black tea in my hand on the plane, and I poured it all over my Burberry trench coat without knowing. About ten minutes in, the flight attendant patted on my shoulder and told me that I spilled drinks all over myself. I freaked out when I saw a small paddle of black tea on my coat and immediately lifted it up. Instead of leaving a huge tea stain, all the black tea just rolled down to the floor without damaging my coat. I was and still am very impressed by it. After this, I can’t stop raving about my Burberry trench coat. If anyone wants to invest in one designer’s item, it should be a classic Burberry trench coat. Unlike other designers’ clothes, this Burberry trench coat is expensive for its functional reasons! It’s classic, versatile, and functional.

I hope you find my tips helpful! Please stay tuned and look out for more updates on my Spring 2017 capsule wardrobe challenge. Do you have any questions or topics you would like to know more about? Leave me a comment below!

Cute outfits!! Love the creativity of wearing your coat as a dress! I also like the 3:3:1 ratio, though I would probably do a 4:2:1 to better match laundry logistics (and at some point wear the dress as a shirt or a skirt to meet the 10 outfits requirements). Good on you for challenging yourself by including that purse as well 🙂
